The MASTER framework · Patent pending

How TestMySkills will decide what each student needs next.

Six steps will turn every answer a student gives into a next step for that student, and a plan their teacher approves. Its foundations work today: mastery per topic, spaced review and adaptive practice.

  1. Map competency

Every test and practice attempt updates each student’s mastery, topic by topic.

Every answer counts as evidence. Mastery is tracked per topic for each student, rather than as one overall score.

  2. Analyze gaps

Topic mastery rolls up to chapters, so gaps show at the level you teach.

Mastery rolls up through chapters, weighted by topic. A teacher sees “weak in electromagnetism” and can drill down to “Faraday’s law”.

  3. Strategize

Students are grouped by where they stand, and each group gets interventions for the teacher to approve.

The teacher copilot groups the class (slipping, at risk, average, close to topper, toppers) and proposes interventions for each group. The teacher approves, changes or denies each one. Nothing reaches a student without that decision.

  4. Train adaptively

Practice goes to each student’s weakest topics.

Practice sets are built per student. Most questions come from their weakest topics in the chapter being taught.

  5. Evaluate mastery

Measured continuously, not only at exam time.

Mastery updates after every attempt, so progress shows between exams, not just after them.

  6. Reinforce

Mastery fades without practice, so topics due for review come back into practice.

Mastery decays when a topic isn’t practised. Up to half of each practice set brings back topics that are due for review.

The idea behind it

Rooted in cognitive tutoring

Cognitive tutoring is a tradition in learning science: build a model of what each student knows, skill by skill, and choose their next step from that model instead of from the class average.

MASTER applies that idea at the scale of a real class. The model is each student’s topic-by-topic mastery, built from every test and practice attempt. The next step is either chosen for the student, as adaptive practice, which works today, or proposed to their teacher as interventions, and the teacher decides: that part is the teacher copilot.
